Researchers at Kent’s School of Computing, working together with psychologists, have co-designed an AI tool, MindTalker, to enhance the lives of people with early-stage dementia. MindTalker aims to alleviate the isolation often experienced by people with dementia through engaging and having meaningful conversation with others. The AI tool offers a new form of “social relationship,” enabling users to connect on a deeper level that are beyond the superficial interactions that are common with existing computer aids. MindTalker could transform the landscape of dementia care globally and address critical ethical considerations, too. This research highlights the plausibility for generative AI to provide emotional support and cognitive stimulation for those with dementia. A Kent School of Computing expert said, “This project encourages the development of AI applications that are empathetic, context-aware, ethical, and effective.”
