However, companies simply did not comply with this petition. A spokesperson for the FLI stated that there has been no significant regulation regarding AI development in the United States. The FLI advocates for the creation of an FDA-style agency to enforce AI regulations and for governments to enforce AI pauses, but no such action has occurred. The FLI says it believes that technology CEOs genuinely desire a positive future with AI, and it hopes individuals concerned with current AI problems and imminent risks will work together rather than in contention. Ironically, Elon Musk, who signed the letter, started a new AI company called X.AI– so, he certainly did not pause.
When regulating AI, the FLI has outlined three AI mistakes the world should not make: 1.) letting technology companies write legislation, 2.) turning the issue into a geopolitical contest, and 3.) focusing solely on existential threats or eye-catching current events.
