Meta's Wild $100 Million Offers to OpenAI Staff Highlights Zuckerberg's Desperate AI Poaching Strategy

At the Snowflake Summit in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman discussed Meta’s attempts to lure OpenAI talent with bonuses up to $100 million and attractive annual pay, yet no top OpenAI staff have accepted, showing that Meta sees OpenAI as a key competitor. Altman pointed out Meta’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence, despite its limited successes so far, with the company’s CEO striving to assemble a leading AI team for its “superintelligence” lab and significantly investing in its Meta AI research division, particularly in the management of the Llama large language models. Reports indicate Meta has delayed releasing its latest AI model due to performance worries, with Zuckerberg voicing frustration over Meta’s AI situation, prompting him to spend billions to attract elite talent.

Recently, Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang announced his move to Meta after a $14.3 billion investment for a 49% share in the startup, with others from Scale AI also joining him. Additionally, Meta has brought in notable hires like Jack Rae from Google’s DeepMind, with Zuckerberg reportedly involved in the recruitment process. During a podcast, Altman expressed doubt about Meta’s strategy of high upfront compensation, suggesting it might weaken work commitment and hinder an innovative culture. He argued that merely trying to duplicate OpenAI’s methods wouldn’t work, as it risks missing the chance to cultivate a genuine learning and innovative atmosphere, while some analysts recognize Meta’s progress in AI development but stress the importance of ongoing investment and innovation for advancing their model training capabilities.
