The Elon Musk company, xAI, plans to continue using fifteen (15) Solar-SMT-130 gas turbines, which it first setup without permits or municipal approval, in its Memphis supercomputer facility for 24/7 usage, powering Musk’s Colossus project, despite deep concerns about pollution and air quality from local residents and environmentalists. Under growing civic pressure, Musk’s xAI finally submitted a single application for an air permit with the Shelby County Health Department to allow for ongoing use of the substandard gas turbines, which do not conform with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations due to their emissions output of hazardous air pollutants, such as formaldehyde, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SOx), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), excessive particulate matter (PM) and ground-level ozone (O3).
